I remember a couple of weeks ago this political personality in South Africa publicly discussing the growing problem of procrastination, not only in the public sector but also in the private sector.
There is in my view two fundamentally different types of idle time at work, procrastination and underutilization. No point in discussing procrastination.
Let’s talk about underutilization. Right now in my working area there are 8 workers. Of these 8 workers, 1 is actually working. The other 7 pretend to be busy. Surfing the Web, organizing emails, writing blogs. Not out of choice but rather out of options. About 87.5% of the workforce around here is non-productive. Scary right!?
This is occurring out of options not out of choice. Surely these individuals are capable or else they wouldn’t have been employed! 50% of these individuals are high salary brackets.
Are business workers in South Africa underestimated? Underutilized? Under-evaluated? Is the so called leadership realistically managing their teams to maximize productivity and efficiency?
